This Hair Loss Remedy Might Hurt You

As if we needed another excuse to avoid pharmaceuticals, it turns out that hair loss drug Propecia, from Pharmaceutical giant Merk has been linked to a lowered PSA.

So, if you’re at risk for prostate cancer it seems you have a choice - your hair or your (sex) life. This is one case where it definitely makes sense to let the little head do the thinking.

Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) have found that the prostate specific antigen (PSA) cancer screening test is falsely lowered by a factor of two in middle-aged men who have taken Propecia, a hair-loss drug used by more than four million men worldwide, for one year.

So, according to this, take Propecia and less the likelihood of early detection of prostate cancer.

Controversy exists as to what is considered a normal or abnormal PSA level, however, a high PSA level and the rise in PSA levels over time, may be indicative that cancer is present and a biopsy is necessary.

How ironic is it that the drug companies are giving you cancer. OK< they’re not giving you cancer, but they’re getting in the way of its detection I’ve never been a big fan of major pharmaceutical companies, but this is ridiculous.

“Here, take our hair loss remedy, and if that doesn’t work, try this”. Hmmm, I wonder - does Merk makes any prostate cancer drugs?
